Germany’s Rostock Government Breaks Ground on Data Center

The Rostock government of Northern Germany last week broke ground on a new municipal facility in Toitenwinkel. The 300kW site will feature 90 sqm (969 sq ft) of white space across two data halls. The government said the facility will secure and modernize the city administration’s IT infrastructure, as well as municipal companies and other facilities in the future.

“We are proud and happy to have reached today’s groundbreaking ceremony as a milestone together with the partners involved. The new data center is an extremely important piece of the puzzle for our city’s digital infrastructure. It ensures reliable IT structures and supports the further expansion of digital administrative services. The data center is thus not only a technical project, but a clear commitment to the digital sovereignty of our municipality," said Dr. Chris von Wrycz Rekowski, senator for finance, digitalization, and order in Rostock.

While it will own the building, the city itself will not offer IT services. The site will be managed by Deutsche Telekom, and the city will make the facility available through which external third parties can also obtain IT services.
