Scala Data Centers has announced that it has secured carbon-neutral certification in Brazil. This comes as the company reaches its net-zero carbon emissions targets, with 100% of its energy consumption deriving from renewable and certified sources. This makes Scala the first company of its kind to be carbon neutral in Latin America.
Scala achieved this certification by reducing its water consumption and improving its energy efficiency. Its operations are also from 100% renewable energy.
Alongside this achievement, the company has also invested in carbon compensation projects such as:
- Preventing the deforestation in 105,000 hectares of rainforest
- Building sustainable economic livelihoods for communities in the northern region of Brazil
- Changing the fuel source of the kilns at the Kitambar ceramics factory in Pernambuco to renewable biomasses. This will reportedly protect 895 square kilometers from deforestation
Speaking about receiving The CarbonNeutral company certification by Natural Capital Partners, Christiana Weisshuhn, Executive Director of Strategy and Marketing at Scala, said: "Actions speak louder than promises, and our commitment to sustainability is evident through our dedication to supporting an array of different projects throughout Brazil."
She added: "We want a better future for our employees, our customers, the communities in which we operate, and our society at large, and we are proud to be doing our part."
Meanwhile, Marcos Peigo, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Scala, said that Scala is "setting a new standard" for the industry and "proving" that it's possible to "reconcile robust growth" with "investments based on sustainability."
