Telekom Malaysia: Green electricity tariff secured for three data centers

Telekom Malaysia (TM) has announced that it has secured a Green Electricity Tariff (GET) for three of its data centers: Klang Valley Core Data Centre (KVDC) in Cyberjaya, Iskandar Puteri Core Data Centre (IPDC) in Johor Baru, and KL City Data Centre (CTDC) in Brickfields. 

The GET from Tenaga Nasional Berhad, a Malaysian electric utility company, will help it to do its part to fulfill the country’s goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The move will reportedly save 27 million kWh per year, equivalent to 19,134 metric tons of carbon emissions.

Commenting on this development, Imri Mokhtar, Telekom Malaysia’s CEO said: “The largest source of carbon emissions worldwide is from electricity generation as well as heat management, and data centers use significant amounts of power to run the information technology and cloud workloads. This indirectly contributes to a high level of carbon emissions as the electricity typically comes from fossil fuel-based energy supply.”
